Proper installation is the key to a beautiful, long-lasting porcelain tile surface. This guide covers industry-standard best practices for Interstyle's 48mm x 48mm (2"x 2") porcelain mosaics, suitable for wall, floor, interior, exterior, and submerged applications.
Interstyle Porcelain Tile | Installation Guidelines
Industry-Standard Specifications (TCNA & ANSI compliant)
1. General Product Information
Interstyle porcelain tile is manufactured and glazed to meet rigorous performance standards. These tiles are suitable for interior and exterior areas, including wet environments and thermal extremes (freeze/thaw).
-
Nominal Size: 48mm x 48mm x 6mm (2" x 2" x 1/4").
-
Mounting: Standard sheets are mesh-mounted. Note: For swimming pools, hot tubs, and submerged use, dot-mounted or face-mounted film sheets are required to ensure 95% mortar-to-tile contact as per TCNA guidelines.
2. Substrate Preparation
According to ANSI A108.01, the substrate must be structurally sound, clean, and free of contaminants.
Deflection: For floor installations, the substrate deflection must not exceed L/360 for ceramic/porcelain tile under live and dead loads.
Leveling: Substrates must be flat within 1/4" in 10' for standard tile. Use a high-quality cementitious leveling compound; do not use thin-set mortar to level the substrate (ANSI A108.02).
Crack Isolation: We recommend applying a crack isolation membrane meeting ANSI A118.12 over the entire surface to prevent substrate shrinkage or movement from transferring to the tile.
Waterproofing: For wet areas, use a waterproof membrane meeting ANSI A118.10 (e.g., Schluter-Kerdi).
3. Movement Joints (TCNA EJ171)
Movement joints are mandatory and must be incorporated to prevent tile tenting or cracking.
Follow TCNA EJ171 for placement.
Interior: Every 20' to 25' in each direction.
Exterior/Direct Sunlight: Every 8' to 12' in each direction.
Movement joints must be placed wherever the tile abuts restraining surfaces (walls, columns) and at all changes in substrate materials.
4. Setting & Materials
To ensure a permanent bond, use a high-performance, polymer-modified thin-set mortar.
Mortar Standard: Use mortar meeting ANSI A118.4 or A118.15 (Improved Modified Dry-Set Cement Mortar).
Trowel Technique: Use a 3/16" V-notch or 1/4" x 1/4" square-notch trowel. Use the "keying in" method: apply a thin coat with the flat side of the trowel, then comb in one direction with the notched side.
Coverage: For mosaics, use the flat side of the trowel to "flatten" the ridges before setting the tile to avoid mortar squeeze-through in the grout joints. Ensure a minimum of 80% coverage for interior dry areas and 95% coverage for exterior or wet areas.
Spacing: Maintain a minimum grout joint of 1/8" (3mm). Use spacers to ensure alignment.
5. Cutting and Drilling
Porcelain is extremely dense; specialized tools are required to prevent chipping and cracking.
Wet Sawing: Use a continuous-rim diamond blade specifically rated for porcelain (e.g., Montolit DNA). Always cut with a high flow of water to prevent thermal shock.
Manual Cutting: For straight cuts on mosaic sheets, use a professional-grade score-and-snap cutter (e.g., Montolit Masterpiuma).
Drilling: Use diamond core bits. Always start the drill at a slight angle to "seat" the bit before moving to a perpendicular position. Use a plywood template as a guide if the drill is not fixed in a press.
Heavy Fixtures: Never hang heavy fixtures (shower doors, grab bars) directly off the tile. Anchors must be secured into the wall framing/structure to avoid stress transfer and cracking.
6. Grouting and Cleaning
Grout Selection: Use a high-performance cement grout (ANSI A118.7) or epoxy grout (ANSI A118.3) for maximum stain resistance and durability in wet areas.
Initial Cleaning: Follow the grout manufacturer's timing closely. Use a damp (not dripping) sponge to avoid washing out the pigment or weakening the joint.
Maintenance: Use pH-neutral cleaners. Avoid hydrofluoric acid or highly abrasive pads that can dull the glazed surface.
